THE IDIOT

ABOUT

According to archival photographic materials, the building belongs to a row of adjoining houses characterized by typical shophouse architecture and was constructed prior to 1937. It is located on Rue D’Ayot (1896), later renamed Nguyễn Văn Sâm (1955), and Nguyễn Thái Bình (from 1975 to the present). The building is currently addressed at No. 62 Nguyễn Thái Bình. Adjacent to No. 60, it is the only house on Nguyễn Thái Bình Street that still retains approximately 90% of the original architectural characteristics of this shophouse row.

Over time, the row of adjoining houses along Nguyễn Thái Bình Street has undergone significant changes. Along the entire street, only three houses remain that still preserve relatively intact the architectural characteristics of pre-1954 shophouses. Our project building is located on the same street and directly adjacent to these three houses. Therefore, we decided to adjust the current façade of the building, restoring its architectural proportions to be closer to those of the three historic houses, in order to evoke the characteristic features of shophouse architecture within the overall streetscape. We retained the two small side windows and increased the height of the central opening to better accommodate the building’s function.

It is difficult to describe the emotions of young designers like us when holding bricks that are older than our own grandparents. Unfortunately, the house has lost its original tiled roof, which has been replaced by a modern corrugated metal roof that has begun to rust over time. The wooden beam system remains generally in good condition; however, one beam was severely damaged by termites and had to be dismantled and stored. In the upper wall areas near the roof ridge, several small sections had deteriorated, resulting in the loss of a number of bricks. We reused bricks salvaged during the demolition of wall sections for the installation of a new staircase to repair and reinforce these damaged areas.

An interesting aspect of this project is that we were permitted to use the second and third floors of house No. 62, together with the third floor and rooftop terrace of house No. 60. As a result, we had to redefine the circulation route for users, from the entrance at house No. 60 to the retail space, exhibition areas, and office spaces.

Regarding finishes, for the ceiling we reinforced and waterproofed the corrugated metal roof and added a finished wooden ceiling with an oil finish, allowing the exposed brickwork and wooden beams to harmonize with one another. For the flooring, we used cement encaustic tiles, a type of tile originating from France and introduced to Vietnam during the Indochina period. The walls are finished with vertically textured plaster. Notably, we also reused existing electrical outlets from previous renovations to avoid further damage to the walls; most electrical conduits are concealed within the floor. As for lighting, the fixtures are mounted directly onto the wooden beam system, creating a light and gentle point of contact. Regarding furniture, all interior elements are designed as self-supporting structures that do not make contact with the existing walls of the house.
